BIROs visit Tasmania

Business, Industry and Regional Outreach Officers (BIROs) Michelle Tuchin and Eleanor Stewart from the Australian Government travelled to North and Northwest Tasmania from 23-25 March to meet with stakeholders and the community to discuss regional issues and employment pressures, and provide visa information sessions. There are many exciting opportunities and projects taking place in the North and Northwest region with investment in agriculture, horticulture, renewable energy, mining, hospitality and tourism being key drivers.

Michelle and Eleanor held an information session in Smithton accompanied by RDA Tasmania and AusIndustry at the invitation of the Circular Head Council where they provided visa information as well as a platform for local businesses to share their experiences.

At the invitation of the Launceston Chamber of Commerce, Michelle and Eleanor provided a free information session covering regional and skilled migration options and the Department’s response to COVID-19 impacts. Michelle and Eleanor also toured the Premium Fresh facility in Forth to see first-hand the wonderful Tasmanian produce that is being exported around Australia and to the rest of the world with the help of visa holders and the innovative use of technology.

VIC/TAS BIROS witnessed the significant level of economic development in the region and the fantastic work that business, industry and government are undertaking to harness the opportunities for the region. Both Michelle and Eleanor anticipate ongoing engagement with the North and Northwest in the near future to provide ongoing regional support and visa information for this growing region.
